Alex Rodiek, bandleader and trumpeter, officially launched FunkCake in November of 2016. They have been quietly gaining notoriety as one of Atlanta’s sought after bands. Comprised of top call freelancers, FunkCake brings the sizzle to their live shows by combining genre-bending arrangements with virtuosic soloing. You can catch them rocking out, especially during Mardi Gras season, or performing at some of the best known venues in Atlanta. They are regulars and fan favorites at the Peachtree Road Farmer’s Market, they have showcased at the historic Smith’s Olde Bar, and have even performed a private party for the one and only, the most charismatic avenger, Robert Downey Jr. Be sure to book us for next event, today!
Alex Rodiek has been a prolific freelancer, session musician, and clinician since 2004 and has performed chamber music, weddings, master classes and church services spanning throughout the Southeast Region. He moved to Atlanta in 2010, and enjoys a busy freelance schedule. In addition to being the band- leader, arranger and contractor of FunkCake, he is a regular member of Mercury Orkestar, Atlanta’s premier Balkan Brass party band.
Alex is also a member of the Beltline Brass Quintet and sits in the solo cornet chair for the Georgia Brass Band. Other notable groups include Bumpin’ the Mango, Zangaro, The Big Beyond, The Whiskey Gentry, A-Town A-List, The Party Up Band, and The Douglas Cameron Big Band. He can also be seen playing trumpet for the South Carolina Philharmonic, Atlanta Pops, Symphony Augusta. He is also a substitute member of the Columbus Symphony, Greenville Symphony, and Dekalb Symphony orchestras. As an educator, Alex joined the faculty of the University of North Georgia as the Trumpet Professor in 2018.
He also has 30 students in his private studio and has conducted master classes at Kennesaw State Univeristy and Georgia State University. Alex Rodiek graduated Cum Laude and holds a Bachelor of Music performance from Vanderbilt University under the tutelage of Alan Cox. He also holds a Master of Music performance where he studied with Judith Saxton at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.
Ben has been active on the Atlanta music scene for the past 25 years as a freelance woodwind performer and teacher. He has worked with independent artists The Black Lips, Prefuse 73, Washed Out and Curtis Harding among others and has appeared on over 50 albums. He currently is a member of Ruby Velle and the Soulphonics, West End Motel, Edgewood Saxophone Trio, The Purkinje Shift and Diamond Street Players.
Reginald Leigh is a Georgia native, and has been a freelance performer since 2014. During this time, he has provided entertainment at various weddings and corporate functions. Additionally, he has been given the opportunity to play at community events held by organizations such as the Atlanta United and Autism Speaks.
In 2014, Reginald received his Bachelor of Music from the University of West Georgia under the tutelage of Dr. John Bleuel. During his tenure at West Georgia, he participated in several solo and ensemble competitions for the Georgia Music Educators Association and the Music Teachers National Association.
He was also a participant in the University’s Jazz Band led by Daniel Bakos, and performed with accomplished musicians Chris Vadala and Thelonius Monk Jr. In addition to FunkCake, Reginald is also a regular member of Mayhayley’s Grave and Citizen Gold.
Joshua moved to Georgia in 2007 on the Bulldog Brass Quintet fellowship. The following year he formed the Half Dozen Brass Band, a group dedicated to fusing rock and jazz with brass. He also founded The Big House tuba quartet where he completed a book of eighteen polkas for tuba quartet.
He has recorded and performed with Ike Stubblefield, June Yamagishi, Tommy Smothers, Blair Crimmins & the Hookers, Antsy McClain, Tray Dahl & the Jugtime Ragband, Abby Wren, Wren & the Wravens, 4th Ward Afro Klezmer Orchestra, Ruby Reds Band, Black Sheep Ensemble, Bulldog Brass Quintet, Half Dozen Brass Band, Divergence, Papa Legba, Big House Tuba Quartet, Bigfoot Brass Band, Mike “Chappy” Wagner, Lefty Hathaway, JazzChronic, Stephanie Nilles, FunkCake, Half Ass Brass Band, and Suzy Sazerac. He has also performed on the Today Show on NBC.
As a composer, Joshua has had his music performed by Phonatopia Tuba-Euphonium Quartet, and the tuba ensembles of the University of Georgia, University of Wisconsin, and the Eastman School of Music. Joshua joined the FunkCake Trio in 2018 and the Funk Cake full band in 2019. Aside from his playing, he has arranged original music and covers for the trio and the larger FunkCake band.
Joshua holds performance degrees in tuba from the University of Georgia and University of Wisconsin. His teachers include Fred Mills of the Canadian Brass, David Zerkel, John Stevens, Jim Doherty, David Mills of the Charlotte Symphony, and Connie Weldon, creator of the modern tuba ensemble.
Wes Funderburk has performed across the United States and Europe and is currently one of the most sought after trombonists and arrangers in Atlanta and the Southeast. He is the author of Funderbone.com and the inventor of Blog Songs! Wes has written, performed, recorded with a wide array of national and internationally-renowned artists including Arrested Development, John Driskell Hopkins, the Stiletto Brass Quintet, Jennifer Holliday, Band of Horses, Spoon, Jermaine Dupri, Cee Lo,The Boston Brass, Natalie Cole, Dallas Austin, SoShy, Kelis, India Arie, Slide Hampton, Joe Gransden, The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the Atlanta Pops Orchestra. He has also been a featured performer at The Atlanta Dogwood Festival, Atlanta Jazz Festival, Atlanta Black Arts Festival, Candler Park Festival, Inman Park Festival, Montreux-Atlanta Jazz Festival, Jacksonville Jazz Festival, Montreux Jazz Festival and North Sea Jazz Festival.
Wes’ recording credits include So So Def Records, Atlantic Records, Verve Records, Colombia Records, Universal Records, Arista Records, Giant Step Records, the Cartoon Network and the Weather Channel. His arranging credits include music for Russell Gunn’s Krunk Jazz Orchestra, Jennifer Holliday, Ben van Dijk, Natalie Cole, Joe Gransden Big Band, The Georgia Brass Band, The Atlanta Jazz Orchestra, Kenessaw State University jazz ensemble, Georgia State University jazz ensemble and brass band, the Piedmont Trombone Society and the Tempest Little Big Band. Wes is also the leader and co-founder of The Funderhorns – a freelance commercial horn section that has recorded in some of the finest recording studios in the country.
As an educator Wes has given clinics and master classes at University of Georgia, Francis Marion University, The University of North Florida, Georgia State University, Columbus State University (Ga), the Mars Hill Low Brass Retreat, Tanglewood Music Camp and numerous high schools across the Southeast.
In 2007 Wes joined the faculty at Kennesaw State University as a jazz band director and from 2010 – 2017 he joined the faculty at Georgia State University as visiting lecturer in jazz studies. Wes earned his Bachelor’s Degree in trombone performance from the University of North Florida and his Masters’ Degree in trombone performance with a concentration in jazz studies from Georgia State University.
Wes has served as a governor for the Atlanta chapter of the Recording Academy and a clinician and performing artist for Rath trombones.
Geoff is the drummer and heartbeat of FunkCake. Before coming to Atlanta, he was in Miami jamming with world-class musical talent. Highlights include Zakk Wylde, Jon Secada, Hiram Bullock, Duffy Jackson, and Arturo Sandoval. In Atlanta, Geoff continued his success by accruing 20+ years of experience as both a player and teacher. You can catch him playing with Bumpin’ The Mango, Zangaro, and The Mercury Orkestar, Atlanta’s premier Balkan Brass Band. Geoff also has a full freelancing and studio session schedule and continues teaching around Atlanta Metro area. Geoff received a Bachelor of Music in Studio & Jazz Performance at the University of Miami.
Drumming (and music in general) has always been an indispensable part of Rob’s life. He attended the University of Georgia where he played with reputable groups such as the Redcoat Band, Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps, UGA Steel Band, and the Atlanta Falcons Drumline. He was also a cast member of the hit Broadway show Blast!, and plays with Atlanta’s premier Balkan party band, the Mercury Orkestar. Rob joined the FunkCake Trio in 2018, and he has also lent his drumming talents to the larger FunkCake band. He has been a prolific performer and teacher for in Georgia for over 25 years. He teaches drums both privately and as a member of the instructional staff for many scholastic and independent drumlines all over Metro Atlanta.
